This didactic workshop presents trauma-informed care philosophy as outlined by SAMHSA and its utility in group work, education, and organizational leadership. The six trauma-informed principles will be outlined, and participants will be challenged to critically reflect on their relationships to these principles while exploring ways of further integrating them into their practice. Trauma-informed principles will be approached as both clinical guidelines and ethical values. “Trauma-informed” and “trauma-focused” will be differentiated. The importance of preventing retraumatization will be emphasized while exploring the standards for creating optimal conditions for trauma survivors in treatment, education, and organizations. A short experiential process will be facilitated using role playing techniques to help participants practice embodying trauma-informed principles in common clinical, educational, and organizational scenarios.
