Earl was not only a past president of IAGP and a world-renowned thinker whose contributions have shaped group analysis internationally. He was, above all, a man of dialogue. Deeply curious, intellectually generous, and genuinely interested in others.

We gently remind you of Earl Hopper’s memorial service taking place on 28 March at 14:00 – 16:00 CET.

The memorial is organised by the president of IAGP in partnership with the Group Analytic Society International, together with a number of other institutions and colleagues who have chosen to join in this shared initiative. This collective presence is itself a way of commemorating Earl Hopper, reflecting his lifelong commitment to dialogue, connection, and the building of bridges across institutional, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries.

Earl Hopper was not only a former President of IAGP and an internationally influential thinker in group analysis; he was, above all, a person deeply devoted to dialogue. Marked by intellectual curiosity, generosity of mind, and a genuine interest in others, he approached every encounter as a shared space for thinking and learning.

He listened attentively to colleagues at all stages of their professional lives, welcoming questions, uncertainties, reflections, and new ideas with openness and respect. For Earl, dialogue was never about consensus, but about the ethical commitment to remain in relationship.

He was also a natural bridge-builder, bringing together people, institutions, disciplines, and cultures. Through both his work and his presence, he created spaces in which difference could be met with curiosity rather than defensiveness. The memorial will be held online on 28 March, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET. Registration details will be shared in the next newsletter, and we warmly invite colleagues to join us.
