Analytic Group  Section

Carla Penna, chair

The Analytic Group Section (formerly group analysis) aims to facilitate the exchange of information and viewpoints between group analysts and others interested in furthering the practice of group analysis throughout the world.

The analytic group section is starting a joint work with collaborators from different parts of the Globe. Our team is composed of Carla Penna, as the Brazilian chair, Anne Lindhardt, from Denmark, Thor-Kristian Island from Norway, Kostantinos Liolios, from Greece, Domenico Agresta from Italy, Marina Mojovic from Serbia and Richard Billow from the United States.

We are excited about the new task and plan to organize webinars with colleagues from different corners of the world and different analytic oriented approaches in groups such as group analytic psychotherapy, group analysis, psychoanalyse de groupe, and vinculo configurations.

Transdisciplinary work will be fostered, as well as collaboration with the Trauma Task Committee.

An update of Dr. Haim Weinberg’s Webinar on Rupture and Repair in Groups

The Webinar of the Analytic Group Section, held on the 7th December at 7:00 pm CET with the topic Rupture and Repair in Groups: in-person and online delivered by our distinguished IAGP colleague Dr Haim Weinberg, was a successful event. More than 200 people registered, and 136 colleagues attended. It was an excellent opportunity to explore misattunements and injuries that take place in group settings, and the possibilities of empathising and recognising the non-empathetic failures, discussing them, opening space for further understanding and reparation.  A Clinical Vignette and Literature about rupture and repair was also introduced by Dr Weinberg.

Please find Konstantinos Liolios’s essay, Rupture and Repair in Group Psychotherapy: Holding the Thread of Relationship in Turbulent Times, in the January 2026 issue of the IAGP Newsletter.

Monthly Updates – Dec. 2025

The Analytic Group Section of IAGP is pleased to acknowledge the fruitful collaboration between IAGP and GASi during GASi’s Autumn Workshop, which focused on the use of Large Group Analytic Groups in diverse professional and community settings. These large-group encounters can offer  a vital space for witnessing, reflecting on, and processing manifestations of the wider social unconscious, illustrating how group-analytic thinking can illuminate collective anxieties, societal tensions, and shared hopes. This cooperative initiative underscored the importance of creating containers where complexity and difference can be held and transformed.

In addition, the Section proudly highlights the insightful webinar offered by Haim Weinberg on Rupture and Repair. His presentation emphasized the inherent incompleteness of human nature, the inevitability of ruptures within group processes, and the profound therapeutic value of engaging in reparative work. Through recognition, dialogue, and co-created meaning, groups can evolve toward deeper cohesion and resilience.
