SUMMARY:From Ritual to Reflection: The Large Group as a Clinical-Educational  Space for Identity\, Role\, and Values
DESCRIPTION:Dr Roberta Mineo\, PhD \nThe group analytic Large Group (LG) has long been a central yet contested element of clinical and educational practice. Too often perceived as a ritual\, the LG in fact provides a unique arena for exploring the social unconscious as it manifests within institutions and organizations. In educational contexts\, its clinical significance becomes particularly evident\, functioning as a reflective space in which unconscious processes shape identity formation\, role challenges\, and value systems. Drawing on my own experience in universities and organizations\, I will present examples where the LG has been applied as a training tool to surface generational anxieties\, especially among Gen Z participants navigating recruitment and workplace entry\, and to help educators confront their role dilemmas in contexts of authority and knowledge transmission (Mineo\, 2021). I will also address the conductor’s position when holding multiple roles simultaneously (teacher\, facilitator\, advisor)\, a task that highlights the tension between neutrality and authority (Mineo & Hofstede\, 2020). This contribution argues that the LG in educational settings retains its full clinical depth: it is not merely an exercise in dialogue\, but a means of accessing unconscious dynamics that shape collective learning\, professional identity\, and organizational belonging.

DESCRIPTION:At the 2024 Systems-Centered Training Annual Conference we will explore the various ways that human systems survive\, develop\, and transform.\nSystems-Centered Training (SCT) provides a way to influence systems so people are more free to develop and take up their membership in a system. The conference is the training ground to explore the SCT theory and methods experientially and test whether authentically connecting to others enables the individual and group to grow and reach their goals. \nA Theory of Living Human Systems is a comprehensive theory that provides a map for understanding what happens in living human systems under what circumstances. It states that living human systems survive\, develop and transform from simple to complex through an increasing ability to recognize differences and integrate them. The method at the heart of this practice\, Functional Subgrouping\, provides a way to explore all sides of a conflict rather than fighting or separating around differences. \nAs therapists\, coaches\, consultants\, leaders\, healthcare professionals\, educators\, and pastoral care counselors\, we develop skills and tools to assist our clients in freeing up energy to accomplish their goals. The 2024 SCT Conference will focus on practical methods for ourselves and our clients to develop authentic connection\, integrate differences\, and develop as individuals\, groups\, organizations\, and communities. \nThe Weekend Institutes and 5-day Conference offer a range of training groups\, interactive workshops and a large group experience. We will explore the methods and tools that contain emotional experience and support group development as we learn to apply the theory and methods. \nExpect to: \n\nSee how the world is different when we see systems rather than just people\nLearn how to recognize and work with group dynamics as they arise\, and how to contribute to the development of a well-functioning group\nExperience how the method of functional subgrouping changes how groups typically deal with differences\nExperience protocols to reduce anxiety and tension and work productively with frustration\, all of which are a natural part of any group\nLearn skills\, methods and practical tools to support collaboration so that individuals and groups can achieve their goals\n\nOur goal is to co-create an open and fun climate that allows us to discover new learnings for ourselves and for our work. \nThis Conference is open to professionals in the fields of mental health\, organizational development\, education\, pastoral care and to those who wish to explore. \nPlease note that many trainings in this Conference are experiential and some participants may find these challenging.
